Full Version: Luke 24:49 and the "Promise of the Father"

Hello forum folks. Is the beginning of Luke 24:49 (the phrase, "I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you . . .") missing in any Aramaic manuscripts?? In some translations of Etheridge this phrase looks like it is missing. I discovered this on the dukhrana.com site. Could this be an omission??

Sincerely,

Mike Karoules
OOOOOOOOOOps! My bad. The phrase on "the Promise" is in Luke 24:48 in Etheridge and not Luke 24:49 like most translations.

Sincerely,

Mike Karoules
Hello Mike Karoules!

Thank you for pointing this out.

As far as I know, Etheridge's translation was not originally broken down by verse, but several verses were grouped together into a paragraph. (See http://www.aramaicpeshitta.com/AramaicNT...e_luke.htm ) Later on, when his translation was split up to read verse by verse, this error must have crept in.

Anyway, I have now updated the Etheridge file over at dukhrana.com in order to correct the error.

The verses now read as follows:

Luke 24:48 And you are the witnesses of these.

Luke 24:49 And I will send upon you the promise of my Father. But await you in Urishlem the city until you be clothed with power from on high.

push b'shlama!

Hello mark,
I quoted this from dukhrana.com

Quote:Luke 24:48 - ???????????? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ??

Luke 24:48 And you are the witnesses of these. And I will send upon you the promise of my Father. (Etheridge)

Luke 24:48 And ye are the witnesses of these things. (Murdock)

Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things. (KJV)

Luke 24:49 - ???????? ???????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????? ???? ???????? ??

Luke 24:49 But await you in Urishlem the city until you be clothed with power from on high. (Etheridge)

Luke 24:49 And I will send upon you the promise of my Father. But remain ye at Jerusalem until ye shall be clothed with energy from on high. (Murdock)

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. (KJV)

I think that it is a mistake in dukhrana. If you look at the Khabouris transcription, wich uses the Etheridge translation aligned with the aramaic text, we have the correct text: Luke 24:49 "And I will send upon you the promise of my Father. But await you in Urishlem the city until you be clothed with power from on high" (Khabouris page 198).
This phrase (And I will send upon you the promise of my Father) is misplaced in dukhrana.com.

I hope that this make sense....

@Lars
I'm sorry Lars, I don't have seen your post until I have posted my own reply here. My bad.
Sorry again...
Don't worry Phil :-)
Shlama Akhon Phil and Lars:
I'm looking at my original draft of the Khabouris transcription and accompanying English translation of John Wesley Etheridge. I can't see any error. Am I missing something?

Shlama Akhi Stephen,

The Khabouris transcription is fine. The error only affected the http://dukhrana.com/peshitta/ page, which now has been corrected. The verse by verse Etheridge translation I use on that page is not taken from your Khabouris transcription, but comes from a different source.

Push b'shlama,

Shlama Kukhon:
Actually this is a good reason for any feedback on the Khabouris transcription. If anyone finds any errors or anomalies please let us know.

Shlama,
Stephen
